Aphorisms, maxims, proverbs, adages -- a wise saying by any name is still worth remembering. Find your favorite Emerson or Thoreau quote and post it, along with a simple explanation as to why you feel it's worth remembering.
Here's mine: "Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something" (Thoreau)
Such advice reminds me of one of my neighbors. At 83 and a retired L&N railroader, he's up and working every day at 6 a.m. He splits wood to sell and operates a sort of steel recycling yard, there on the same land where at least three generations of his family farmed and cut wood. Once when I stopped to talk to him and he found out that I was a teacher, he shared with me that his daughter married a man who taught at Tulane. "And you know," he said, "that's all he can do."
Thoreau would have liked my neighbor.

"Do not go where the path may lead,go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."- Ralph Waldo Emerson. This basically means don't do what everyone else does. Instead, you should be a leader and pave your own way in life so that others can follow you and your actions. You should be a leader in all you do and set a good example for those who follow you. I believe this is a quote worth remembering because it is something you should live out daily.
ReplyDelete"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." (Emerson) I feel that this quote is worth remembering for many reasons. First, people shouldn't always follow what is already there. Make a new path and explore new things that others haven't. Second, why be a follower and see what others have already seen when you can be a leader and discover new things. Last, being a follower, instead of a leader, could lead you into trouble. Whereas, being a leader you can use your own judgement to determine right and wrong.

ReplyDeleteThis would have to be my favorite quote by Emerson because I believe that a person should follow their own heart and guide there own way through life instead of following others. Using your own way to express yourself is a lot more convincing than following what someone else has said or done. It makes you your own person. Be a leader, not a follower.
"Always do what you are afraid to do"- Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is a quote that has a lot of meaning. To me, it means to never be afraid to do something. Also it means to live your life to the fullest. It means do not let your fear stop you from what you want to do.
