The Public's Short Attention Span in Julius Caesar: Do We Still Have This Problem Today?

In Julius Caesar, the public is often portrayed as having a short attention span. One minute, they're all behind General Pompeii. The next, they want to crown Caesar dictator for life. Discuss some of the times when their attention span is again brief and the public supports yet another faction.

The question still remains: Is the public today the same as it was in 44 B.C.? Do we lack the focus to support leaders? If so, how?

  1. I believe the public is almost the same as it was back then. If one leader fails we all go against them even if it was very minor. For example, Bush with Iraq, he made that mistake and then every one was against him. We lack the focus to support leaders exactly.

  2. In current times, I do believe that our public isn’t wary enough. We all rely too much on the media which can be deceiving. We all should pay a bit more attention to what is going on in Washington. For instance, the media can use things such as the issue of abortion or global warming to divert us from what is truly going on behind the scenes. Although those are important issues, to be honest we have other affairs to lose sleep about. We should rely less on what people tell us and more on fact.

When one slows down to observe public opinion or attention span, they will find it to be inconsistent and ever-changing in the United States. One reason for this is that people are concerned with how events will directly affect them. Also, people naturally desire to be informed and involved. Finally, the media evangelizes current events and how we are to feel towards these said events.

To begin with, it is merely instinctive to be concerned with your personal life and surroundings. Constantly concerned with the well being of themselves, people stay caught up with the news to be informed of a potential personal gain or loss.

Next, the public desires to be informed. In the right state of mind, any person would take the opportunity to be informed. In other words, people follow the events and crisis’s to prevent “being in the dark”. Honestly, who likes other people knowing more than them?

Finally, the media spreads the message of current events and crisis’s and forms an opinion for the public in a sense. For example, the media displays news of the economic bailout package supplying CEO’s of major companies with billions of dollars that are spent frivolously and carelessly. This sways the public’s opinion in a most persuasive manner.

From gas prices to presidential election races, the public has an ever-changing opinion of current events. This is due to personal concerns, the public’s desire to be informed, and media manipulation and persuasion. By no means do I believe that one should not be informed or reject media messages, but I do believe in individual opinions as opposed to believing in what the public does.

There are many different events that affect different people in different ways. Some people are concerned about political problems while others aren’t. I think it depends on what the issue is about and if it affects them or not. If the issue is something they are concerned about they will worry about it more and take note in it. If the issue doesn’t involve them or want have an effect on them they tend to not pay attention to it and not care. Sometimes we rely on what others are saying about the economy and we get certain issues mixed up and tangled. If we listened to the facts and not the world’s view on things then maybe there would not be so many fights and controversy today. We tend to listen to what the world’s opinion is and everything goes from bad to worse. So if we listen to what the facts are then maybe there wouldn’t be so many arguments, we will be more informed and know the real truth. Maybe we should just make our own opinions and then make our own decisions.

  5. Today i believe that the attention span of our generation is very short. My example would be this; when the elections started, everybody wanted to see Barack Obama as president. Ok so now he's in office and I've only been hearing negative things about him. So why put somebody in office when you're just going to put the blame on them?? It won't make any sense. So i think that we should stay focused on one goal; making this country better. So let's keep this world positive.

  6. I believe that our world today does still lack focus in supporting our leaders. We listen to what others say more than making our own opinions and beliefs. The media tends to have a great deal of power over this. In some occasions the news will be saying one thing which will change many people's feelings on a certain subject, and a few days later it would have changed to something totally different. Our country does not have a firm head on their shoulders, they do not know what they want to believe or how they want to feel. People do not want to support their leaders on behalf of either their race or a slight mistake that they have made. Most of our country's members will hold grudges against our leaders and will not support them if they do not think or do what they would like them to do and how they would like them to carry out certin things. So, I do think that our country is not strong supporters of our leaders in our society today.
