Introduction to American Romanticism
Unit 2 looks at the literature between 1800 and 1860, focusing on the social, cultural, and political forces that shaped the period. Using the timeline on pages 164-165 of your Glencoe textbook, pick three years (marked by three events) and discuss how those events might have affected American life. Use the Internet to research your findings, but be sure to parenthetically cite the source of your information. Be sure to paraphrase (not plagiarize).

In 1854 Harriet Beecher Stowe published the book Uncle Toms Cabin. I think this marked a turning point in the status of women in society. Women during this time period weren’t really expected to make big outbreaks in literature. They were given a certain position. Women were to man the kitchen, and watch the children, and even stay home all day to tend to the needs of the family. They were never expected to have a job, or manage money, or better yet create a major turning point in America literature. I think When Harriet wrote this book, she showed America just how powerful women could be. She showed women everywhere that they could make a difference in something that was out of their stereotype.
ReplyDeleteThis book was written beautifully. The book paints a picture for the reader as if you were witnessing it for yourself. Not to mention she used vivid words. This book proved to writers everywhere that women could be just as talented as men. It was like a warning. The point is women everywhere began to realize they could do it to. This led to womens rights movements, and feminism. Women began to make a better position for themselves.
Another changing event was the potato famine of 1845. This hunger famine cause a major increase in immigration. Most of the immigrants coming over from Ireland because tats where the hunger was really bad. The deal was people didn’t know what to do; there was no money, shelter, food, there was nothing, People began to immigrate over to the united states. They cam looking for anything that could get them something. They would work anywhere. They would work in factories, or even on the streets. They needed the money.
This caused another major problem. The United States began to get crowded. To many people stared coming over and the city began to change. Factories stared allowing children and women to work in the business, minimum wage decreased and the production line moved faster. The city began to look dirty and grimy. The city became somewhere that wasn’t appealing. Immigration changes the face of America.
1828, Andrew Jackson is elected President. Andrew Jackson wasn’t like other presidents. He was a common man. He stood for things that common people stood for, but he also was strong enough to take on the things that needed to dealt with in society. This was a turning point in America because is proved that people who were common like him, could stand for something too. Those people could stand up and make a difference just like him.
