Cell phones and driving

The Alabama legislature is considering legislation that would make texting and driving an illegal combination. What are your thoughts on the use of cell phones while driving? Should adults be given the privilege while teens are restricted? Should any driver using a cell phone while his/her car is in motion be cited for reckless or risky driving?

  1. Why texting a driving should be avoided:

There is a lot of debating and arguing happening right now over the use of cell phones while driving. Personally, I believe that texting and driving is really dangerous. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s a big deal to just be talking on your cell phone. The past few months people have been getting in a series of tragic car accidents due to texting in the divers seat. Honestly, I don’t think you can do both.

Texting just takes up to much of our concentration to focus on driving as well. When you drive you have to focus on everything going on around you. You don’t only have to worry about your safety, but also the safety of others around you. There is a statistic that says texting a driving is just the same as driving under the influence of alcohol. The part of your brain that reacts to things that are happening around you is completely consumed by what your doing with your cell phone.

Another issue with texting and driving is that it could effect you emotionally as well. When you read something that is unpleasant or unsatisfying, we intend to react to it unstably. The truth is our emotions could overcome us and it is not safe to drive when you are emotionally unstable. Over all, texting and driving is not a good combination. As drivers we are given a responsibility to be trusted behind the wheel. We are told to watch for the safety of others and be aware of our surroundings. The best way to avoid many tragic text related deaths is just not to do it.

  2. Well stated, Rachel. These words are good advice for all -- not just teens. What do you think about women putting on makeup while they drive?

  3. The combination of texting and driving should definitely be avoided. It is incredibly dangerous to perform both at the same time. These two actions should not be attempted at the same time.

How many people do you know that have been in an accident due to lack of focus on the road? I know way too many of those people. It is a proven fact that people who are being distracted from the road are 3 to 5 times more likely to get in an accident. The odds of a teenager who becomes distracted of getting in an accident is above 100%. There is no avoiding the fact that if you are using a cell phone while driving you will get into an accident.

You may be asking yourself, "with such overwhelming odds, why would anybody want to do such a stupid thing?". Heres the answer: disregard for the safety and welfare of others. A driver using a cell phone is like a doctor performing surgery on two people at the same time. It's absolutely impossible to focus on both and somebody is going to end up hurt.

This is a topic that I feel strongly about. It angers me deeply when I hear people argue for cell phones. There is no need for them on the road. They are distracting and incredibly dangerous.
