Connecting to the literature
Now that you have considered the written contributions of William Byrd, William Bradford, Mary Rowlandson, and Equiano, think about the details of your own life. What trail of written work will you leave to explain the lifestyle you've enjoyed in the 21st century? What conclusions will your posterity draw? What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change? Pick a question and respond briefly, elaborating on details that you think the future will find interesting.

I love Mrs. Shehane more, Jay-Scrub.
ReplyDeleteI think that poetry reveals a lot about myself. I have always been able to express myself through poetry. Poetry is like music in a way and listening to music kind of sets my mood. I don't expect that to change in the future. However if it did change I think it would change according to my mood. All in all poetry and writing are just forms of expressing ourselves and will always be subject to some type of change through time.
ReplyDeleteThe teenagers of the 21st Century are not the best this country has ever seen. Many lack work etiquette, motivation, and good role models in their lives. If you looked into their lives, you would see that most teens waste their time on the computer, texting and talking on the phone rather than doing homework and studying for the things that really matter. This new generation of teens really shows that our country is slacking off. Parents don’t seem to care about what their children do or what happens to them.
ReplyDeleteThe high school drop-out rate has reached an all-time high over the years. Many teens become pregnant during high school and leave themselves no choice but to put their lives to an abrupt halt. Teens just don’t care and don’t try as hard to achieve their goals as much as teens from decades before. Our generation has become one that does not work and get everything they want from their parents. Teens don’t have jobs and their parents are harming themselves and their children by not teaching them how to work for a living. Our generation is slowly going down the drain and its not going to get any better.
What reveals the most about us now, and how do we expect it to change?
ReplyDeleteI think what reveals teens the most is their personality or their attitude. A boy could be the cutest boy ever and be classified as a jerk because of his attitude. A teenagers cell phone also reflects who they are. You can tell who anyone is by their cell phone. There are tons of different ways to express who you really are.
In response to the question: What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteThe life of the average modern american teenager is one of luxury. As things become more and more self maintaining we become less responsible. This is clearly illustrated in the literature of Bradford, Rowlandson, Byrd, and Equiano.
If over the span of about 300 years we have developed into such a self maintaining society full of machines to do every task for us, then, in another 300 years it would not be surprising to see a race of humans which is run entirely by machines.
It is apparent that the work mentioned in the literature, mainly that of William Byrd, such as planting crops and building houses has been made easier as time passed. I think that the writing of William Byrd shows the most about the modern american teenager and the difference in how much work we think we are made to do and how much we really do.
Well, no piece of literature is written on my life and I doubt there ever will be. If there was however, I hope they would say that I was an honest, loyal friend. I hope they would say that I reflected my relationship with the Lord in my daily life. I hope it would reveal my love of just living every moment to the fullest.
ReplyDeleteI hope that any writing left behind would reflect my personality. I am a very cheerful person and I love to make people laugh. I am very down-to-earth. I don't express much emotion, if any. I am very sarcastic, but I make sure that people know I am kidding and do not takke offence. That is basically what any piece of literature about me would reveal.
This is in response to the following question: what reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteI believe the average teenager to be not very self-sufficient at all. Nearly all of us are aided un-necessarily by modern machines and new technologies of all kinds. It seems today none of us can do our own work. Nothing like the hard work of the past times. Work our ancestors faced and overcame. Why can we not accomplish this?
In the years to come I think this will only increase dramatically. As technology develops more and more, this is apparent. Teens everywhere and of all ages will be using new devices of the time to achieve even the simpliest tasks such as taking of the trash.
Our society is becoming a lazy one.
What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteAlmost every teenager today has a cell phone. It pretty much describes them and their life.If you were to take their phone, it would say so much about them and you would learn things that i'm sure you never even knew.A cell phone to a teenager is not just a piece of plastic that takes up space and causes trouble. Some teens would consider the phone their life.
When they start to do that, the phone almost takes over their life.It seems that every time you try to take it from them, they will see more of a chance to rebel.Cell phones can also have a major effect on your relationship with them. They will become more secretive. Many teens text today and it's causing some pretty major problems.Car accidents are just one of the many different ways textin is affecting teens. Our generation needs to get better and it needs to happen very soon.

ReplyDeleteThere are many things that reveal evidence about teenagers lives today. Cell phones and computers are two big things that reflect our lives. From Myspace to texting teenagers express themselves in many ways, leaving a trail of information about our lives and how we feel and think.
ReplyDeleteAs we get older our interest will change and so will the things that reflect us the most. As adults, Myspace and texting will become less and less important and other things will fill in the spaces, like work and family, leaving an even greater story.
Tyler, poetry and music do reveal much about a person's tastes and views. What kind of poetry and would type of music might be found in a typical teenager's home, cell phone, or computer? What would that "evidence" reveal about a teenager?
ReplyDeleteAmber, your essay is really thought-provoking, but what "evidence" can be found (in writing or recorded) that reveals the lack of care you seem to believe is rampant in today's culture?
ReplyDeleteMrs.Shehane,
ReplyDeleteI think a prime example of an item that changes lives is the I-pod. If people didn’t listen to music then they would be dull and sad all the time. When I listen to music I become happy and overwhelmed with excitement because I love music! Also, listening to someone else's I-pod reveals their inner person and helps people to understand them better.
I think that an item that reveals a lot about a person is their cell phone. There are many different things you can find out about a person by looking at someone’s text messages or by reading what they have typed in the notepad. A lot of people keep their personal life stored and kept hidden through their phones. It will show the true personality of a person. I am pretty sure that it wasn't like that 10 years ago because there weren’t many cell phones. And since technology has come so far in the past few years I would believe that in the future it will tremendously change.
ReplyDeleteI think teenagers are most revealed by how they act, and show respect to friends, family, and anyone you may have just meet. It shows the character traits you possess that you can learn through literature.
ReplyDeleteTeenagers in the 21st Century
ReplyDeleteErin Downing
There are many things that go on in a teenager’s life that is not seen by just the appearance. Sure there are ways to change the dramatic lifestyle of a teenager, the problem is, the teens of this century, most of the time, aren’t willing to change. They are satisfied just the way they are and will not change for just anyone.
Parents, in most cases, attempt to change the life of there “terrible” teenager, and it usually doesn’t work out the way they planned. I believe teenagers are more difficult to handle in this century simply because parents have no clue what they are doing most of the time and think restriction is the only way that the child will learn how to behave, when in reality, it makes the teen want to be more rebellious towards the parents. In the end, it only makes the parents look like they are unable to control there child.
I think that this blog is pretty cool. I'm looking forward to reading what everybody has to say. This is really the first blog I've been a part of so I don't have much to say yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm basically just your average guy that tries to make good grades. I'm really not into literature and reading that much but somehow I'm good at writing. Hopefully this blog will get more interested in American literature.
What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect it to change?
ReplyDeleteI think what reveals the most about me is my drawing. When I am drawing I am expressing what I feel and what I think. You get to know the real me. People have different opinions on what I draw. Some people will either like it or not like it. Sometimes my drawings reflect on my mood or even the music I am listening to. Drawings can reflect on anything. It is even possible to draw a picture and color it with the brightest colors you can find and it will look bland and colorless.
I think an item that reveals a lot about a person in today’s society is the i-pod.
ReplyDeleteMany teenagers own one and base their music choices on what songs sound best. Some even base their music choices on their emotions. If someone is sad and depressed, they may choose an older, slow song rather than a new, upbeat song. You can tell a lot about a person by the music they listen to. I-pods have a major impact on society, without them, life would be dull.
Alecia, I think teenagers are most revealed by their attitude and how they present theirself. A first impression really does matter so it is always good to respect yourself and others in your surrondings.
ReplyDeleteWhat reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteI believe what reveals the most about me now is anything dealing with artistry of any kind, whether it be music or visual arts in general, that is how I express myself the most. I don't exactly expect that to change much in my life, especially since I plan to take the art career course. Though I do know that without art or music to reveal how I feel, I wouldn't be as much of an open person today, or be at all like myself and how I am now. iPods are a material possession that most teenagers have these days, and I believe that without them, things would be immensely different. You can tell a lot about a person by giving them a piece of paper and a pencil, telling them to draw what they feel, and the same goes for a person and their iPod, if you look at the type of music that they listen to.
Q:What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteA: The thing that reveals the most about me now would be my iPod. It has all my favorite music that pretty much influences my life. All songs tell a story, and usually the songs you listen to relate to things you have been through in your life. This is why you can tell so much about a person through the music they listen to. It shows a lot about a persons personality.
What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect it to change?
ReplyDeleteI am pretty much just your average teenager. I like to chill and pretty much just go with the flow. I dont really make good grades but that doesn'mean thatIdon'ttry or care. Something that reveals the most is my attitutde and my reactants to other people. I think some peoples attitudes get mistaken sometimes. Being a teenager isn't always as easy as it seems. My brain is really tired now so I guess that's all i am going to say.

ReplyDeleteI would leave behind my various array of writing notebooks, which, trust me, is A LOT. I currently one two boxes full of my writings, things I have not shared. This would be a way people would remember me by, mostly because all people do is see me write. It would draw that, well, I'm not really sure. Probably that I was never a simple person, and no one ever is.
I don't really know what "reveals" me. I suppose the type of music I listen to. Many say I'm set back to "Old Fashioned." I differ from other kids because while they listen to T.I and The Jonas Brothers, I'd rather kick back with my Grandfather's record player and listen to Bobby Darin, Jackie Wilson, The Beatles, and The Monkees. But, I suppose that's what makes me ME right? My style of music may change, it may not change until I am 40.
What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect to change that?
ReplyDeleteWhat reveals the most about me would have to be my personality I guess. I don't have any plans to change my personality because thats the one thing that makes a person unique and shouldn't be changed unless you have a negative personality. And thats about it....
What reveals the most about you now?
ReplyDeleteWhat reveals the most about me is my attitude or personality and clothing. If you talk to a person and have a conversation with them then you will start to get to know them. Most people like to judge people before they get to know them or they will judge them because of their friends.
In response to the question: What type of writing would be left to explain the lifestyle that I have enjoyed in this century?
ReplyDeleteI believe that the type of literary writing that would be left to explain my lifestyle in this century would be a novel. My life so far has been an up and down struggle with sports, school, and my personal life and a novel is basically that which tells a story of someone's life and the struggles that one faces.
I am also a very sincere and funny person that enjoys life and spending time with my friends. I think that someone would write truthfully about me and they would talk about all of my attributes: good and bad. So that people may get a true understanding of how i lived and they will appreciate me for that.
What reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect it to change?
ReplyDeleteI think what revels the most about me now is my iPod. I could not live without my iPod. The types of music I listen to do not appear as if only one person listen to the iPod. I have many different genres: Rock, Rap, Reggae, Alternitive, Christian, Pop, and many more. My mood often changes so I never know what I'll listen to next. In the future my music taste will more than likely change and its importance may die out, but for now my iPod reveals the most me.
What reveals the most about is now, and how do we expect it to change?
ReplyDeleteI think that a person's personality reveals a lot about them. You can tell a lot about what someone is like just by listening to them talk or watching their facial expresions. For example, if someone is always happy then people are more than likely going to think that they are a happy person.
I think what reveals the most about a person is what activities a person is involved in. Whether that person is invloved in athletics or if they are very educationally oriented. You can always tell a lot about that person by what the enjoy.
ReplyDeleteWhat reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteMany different things reveal how someone is as a person such as: what you wear, the music you listen to, your hobbies, the people you hang out with, home life (family),and your personality. All these characteristics make me who i am today and i believe those same characteristics will make me who i am in the future too. As we grow older and mature how we act to everyday life will change depending on our mood or how we let people or different things affect our attitude. In the end everyone is unique in their own way and nobody should be judged because of it. You can love em' or hate em'.
What reveals the most about us now, and how do we expect it to change?
ReplyDeleteI believe cell phones reveal alot about a person. Their wallpaper, schedule, text messages, contacts, and even the music on there say so much. You could learn just about everything through a persons cell phone. It contains so much of someone's information. My cell phone has alot of my personal information and alot about me. I'm sure in the future my cell phone will mean as much to me as it does now.
Nobody can truly know what reveals the most about anyone because people would not know if a specific item or even a piece of literature or some other form of writing is the true "creature" or just a cloak to attract of frighten others. Cell phones, Myspace profiles, and Facebook profiles can show the true nature of someone, but can also be misleading. Appearances dont reveal much, and what it reveals depends on how the person perceives it.
ReplyDeleteThe question is What reveals the most about you now and how will it change. What reveals the most about me now is that I am a very caring person and that I am willing to help anyone as long as they need the help and I don't think that will change because it is something that I like to do.
ReplyDeletei think my life is going down hill!!!
ReplyDeleteim about to crash. but, im going to make it.
I love hunting and fishing and going to church. I love to listen to what the preacher has to say. Also i like hanging out with friends on the weekends and going mud riding. I like to watch hunting videos on tv and helping people. I love bloging do you?
ReplyDeleteThe piece of written literature that I would want to be left behind talking about me would be something that I wrote explaining my life and what it was like living in the 21st century. I would write something that told the truth but it would still be interesting so no one would get bored reading it.
ReplyDeleteWhat reveals the most about you now, and how do you expect that to change?
ReplyDeleteWhat reveals the most about teens today is the way they act and present themselves. Some people just don't care how they act around other people.
I believe that the people in this century are much more laid back and mellow than the people in the older times who were very aggressive over the littlest things. I have noticed this because it occurs in my family as well with many other families I have encountered. With that said I also believe that I am much more lazy than I would have been if I had grown up say 50 years ago instead of this time. I sometimes wish I had grown up in a different time but I do know that if I hadnt grown up today and in these times that I wouldn't be the same person I am right now. I know that people in this century take a lot more for granted than in the older times. Living today is not as easy as it may seem. It is very hard to resist all the temptations that people go through these days. examples such as sex, drugs, and alcohol. I believe this is a century of darker times with the way things are going right now, no hope of changing paths in the near future.
ReplyDeleteI have a personality like no other. To start with I love music. Whether it be listening to it or playing it. I know so many songs from so many different genres. From The Beatles, Elvis, and Johnny Cash, to all the major hits of today. I play guitar and I am always looiking for new music to play. I even write music so that I can express myself. If you ask me what I do in my free time it would be playing guitar, piano, or reading a book. Of course now you are probably thinking that I'm a quuiet person. Actually, I am very energetic once I get to know you. I love to go to the movies, shop, and play sports. (Just for fun though and occasional competition)
ReplyDeleteI also am very strong on today's world and how teens need to start acting like they are people of a free country and not like they have to do what everyone else's is doing, but this topic is for another day.
Hayden
The thing that reveals the most about me now is that I enjoy experiencing different things and living life.I'm basically focused on doing a good job on my work at school and working toward my lifetime goals. I expect to change as my learning skills increase throughout life.
