In The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne is forced to wear the scarlet letter "A" as a constant reminder of her adultery. What other types of public humiliation does she endure? How does this make her feel? How does her child Pearl respond to the scarlet letter?
Part 2 of this question extends to the present: What types of public humiliation do people endure today? Is there anything remotely close to Hester's experience still present in today's world, or has shame itself become a thing of the past?

Hester Prunne was forced to wear the scaret letter "A". In addition, she was forced to stand on the saffold for everyone to look at her as her punishment. This experience had to be very embarassing because her sin was exposed to the world and all she could do was stand there as people stared and pointed at her, Pearl, and the "A" on her chest. Pearl seems to understand that the "A" is something different and many times she touches it. She had become so accustomed to it that when Hester took it off she would not go to her till she put it back on. The letter defined Hester as an adulterer but as the story progressed the meaning of the the "A" changed to able and the people began to accept her.
ReplyDeleteToday adultery isn't considered as bad as in the Scarlet Letter. Many people commint adultery today and life just goes on like nothing happened, but in the Scarlet Letter if you commit a sn you would be put into jail, hung, and publicly humiliated.
