Not only does persuasion play a large part in buying and selling in our society, but it also plays a role in politics. Politicians are simply really good persuaders or sellers! Congressmen and senators use persuasion regularly to convince colleagues that the bill they want to pass will do some greater good for the American people. Advertisers and politicians use persuasion to:
a)To cause (someone) to do something by means of argument, reasoning, or entreaty.
b)To win over (someone) to a course of action by reasoning or inducement.
c)To make (someone) believe something.
Just like the guys up in Washington, when writing an argument, or a persuasive essay, organization is critical. First one needs to ask, what is the goal of the argument and who is the audience trying to be reached? Once this goal has been established, work can begin! Next, it is important to decide why one is trying to persuade the intended audience (see reasons above).
Next, you guessed it, is how. How can the audience be persuaded?
In writing a persuasive essay, it is good to ask: what will affect the audience the most? Will they be more likely to agree if the writer uses a good, strong, ethical argument? Will they be moved by an emotional appeal? Or will the evidence be able to speak for itself and convince the audience? Learning which direction to take with the audience will help the writer better convince the listeners.
If the writer finds that the audience, say, a church or religious group, will be affected most by an ethical argument, the writer will focus on the ideas central to the groups' beliefs. The writer's goal is for the group to have even stronger feelings toward whatever the cause may be after hearing the argument. A good example of an ethical appeal to an audience is a preacher speaking to a group on abolishing abortion.
If the best way to reach the audience is through emotion, the writer may use an emotional story, real or fictional, to play on the audience's empathy. A good example of an emotional appeal is Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech.
If the writer decides to use the facts to appeal to the audience, the writer will present relevant, tangible evidence to back up the argument. A good time to use this approach would be when the writer is trying to raise awareness for a disease.
To organize ideas once the writer has decided who the audience is, what the goal of the argument is, and how to reach the audience, he or she may use the following traditional format:
- Introduction
- Narration, or background statement of the facts
- Forecast of the topics to be presented
- Conformation, or the body
- Rebuttal (acknowledge apposing viewpoints, but use them to prove your point)
- Conclusion
Now that you are well informed on persuasive writing, it's time to write! Please pick from the following topics, decide your own stance, and begin persuading!
1. How harshly should professional athletes be treated when found in possession of a drug or when given a d.u.i.?
2. Should an economic bailout plan be passed?
3. To what extent should embryonic stem cell research be used to improve the quality of human life?
4. Should the government have the power to screen all communication, even when the country is not at war?

When our country is at war, it is okay if they listen in on conversations. I mean it’s for our safety. Right? On the other hand, if we are not at war, then what is the point of listening to conversations? That’s invasion of privacy. The government should not be allowed to do whatever they want because they are the government. That’s just stupid.
ReplyDeletePersuasive essay in response to the question: How harshly should professional athletes be treated when found in possession of a drug or when given a D.U.I.?
ReplyDeleteAthletes are the same as you or me and should be prosecuted as so. It’s unfair how those who are famous are all of sudden able to get away with anything they want. Where in the constitution is it written that laws don’t apply to the rich and famous? It’s not; therefore, the upper class should not get special treatment and exemption from persecution.
Recently Michael Phelps was caught taking a hit off his bong and, even with the photo as evidence, was only suspended by USA swimming for three months, whereas, a normal middle class American would have been put in jail for such a thing. I think that if it’s going to be legal for the rich and famous, then, it should be legalized for everyone. If the law enforcers don’t like that then they should think twice before letting an athlete or other famous person off with minimum charges.
Musicians, athletes, and famous actors get off of drug and alcohol charges everyday through a quick stint in a rehabilitation clinic, but they only stay in for a small amount of time before leaving, only to be back the next week. The upper class should be equally prosecuted with the middle class. If this happened then maybe the upper class would regard the law more highly.
Athletes should be equally prosecuted with the rest of society. When they get off on any charge it makes them think that they are above the law. They’re not.
I think that when a professional athlete is caught when any type of drug they so should be treated the same as any person that did the same thing. Just because they preform at the top of the world does not mean that they can make mistakes. If they are caught with steroids then they should be kicked out but any thing else they should bre treated fairly.
ReplyDeleteThis past weekend Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003. He should be given another chance in the playing baseball for the New York Yankees. All the other players that used them were kicked out and banned for life.
I think that they need to look past that they play professional sports, and do what they would do to a regular person. I know that they are roll models for little kids but they are human, they can make mistakes to.
You would have to think about it like this. If you were playing sports and say that someone took a picture of you doing something that only adults could do, would you want to be banned from the sport that you love to play? I would not want it to happen to me either.
Not only would you be hurt by it but the fans would be to. They like seeing you play and they like cheering for you.
Professional athletes should be treated just as we are when we are in possession of any drug. They are still human beings and so they shouldn’t get any special treatment just because they are professional athletes. They are still breaking the law. The police don’t let it slide when we are in the possession on drugs, therefore they shouldn’t let it slide with them. Just because they are professional athletes and they make a lot more money than some of us doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be charged as a criminal.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone is in possession of a drug, they should be treated as a criminal. It’s not fair to us if they can do something illegal and get off with a warning, but if we do it then we will most likely be going to jail or facing harsh punishment. Like the old saying says, “Don’t do the crime, if you can’t do the time.” That saying is very much true. If you’re willing to do the crime, you must be willing to do the time.
When the cops do let it slide, it angers the people of the world. They then start to think well they can do that and not get in trouble, so can I. The crime rate usually goes up, because they are thinking that they can do whatever they want and not get in trouble. That’s not the case at all. When they are on trial, they just sit there and blame the athletes. They will say that this person got caught doing the same thing I was and yet they aren’t in jail, so why are you putting me in jail?
Athletes do have a lot of pressure on them which causes them to do drugs, but so do other people in the world. If we can’t use the drugs to calm down our pressure, they shouldn’t be able to either. In fact, the pressure that some of the people in the world face are far greater than anything an athlete faces. They would probably need the drugs more than any of the professional athletes. Pressure can sometimes get the better of someone and cause them to make some really stupid decisions like taking drugs.
Drugs can not only be harmful to the person taking them, but also to the people around that person. That person could cause harm to someone or to themselves. They should not be anywhere on the streets, but rather in jail or at least rehab. Cops wouldn’t want us out on the streets while taking drugs, so why would they want professional athletes who are probably twice as strong and could cause more damage to something or someone.
Stem cells can be the answer to many of our health related problems, although they do represent the beginning of human life, their use is not unethical due to the fact that the life has not yet been started. Human life is a precious thing; however, if the life has yet to begin it could go to better use by ending disease and solving problems. After all, if the person having stem cells taken from them has millions, then what loss of life is that? It is the loss of life which may never exist in the first place.
ReplyDeleteStem cells are, as we know, cells inside of the human anatomy that later develop into embryos. They are not specified to a specific function, therefore, can be used to replace any damaged or nonfunctional cell. Treating problems all of the way from blood clots to cancer, stem cells very well could be the universal cure of tomorrow. Stem cells can reproduce and develop limitlessly. So the limit to stem cell research should be limitless.
Today scientists have identified two types of stem cells. The first is known as embryonic stem cells, which are the cells that later develop into embryos, hints the name, and can proliferate, or reproduce, for a year with out differentiation. The next type is adult stem cells which are also known as somatic stem cells are found in many different organs and used there as self-repairing method. Somatic are not able to proliferate in the lab with out differentiation for that long. Although they have different properties, they can both be used in the same way.
When a patient has cancer, they often have to undergo painful chemotherapy which is harsh because it destroys all cells and not just those that are infected with the cancer. After this process, stem cells may one day be injected to replenish the cell supply in the body, making the cancer patient well again. They can also be used in bone marrow transplants by making the bone grow faster. In the future, it is the dream of many scientists that someday stem cells can be used to regenerate decayed bone or blood cells. This would be a leap in medical technology.
As I said before, the practice of using stem cells is not unethical. Most males will not reproduce to their full potential in their lifetime, which would require having millions of children. In using these stem cells in research to find cures for diseases, the stem cells that are not used to reproduce will not go to waste. Besides, shouldn’t we worry about the lives of the people we already have here before we worry about the ones that have the potential to possibly exist one day? Using the embryos themselves would be one thing, but using one of the million potential embryos in the male anatomy isn’t unethical, its actually quite practical.
I believe that athletes that get caught having possession of a narcotic or performance enhancing drug should be punished harshly. They are in the public spotlight and they should be held to the highest standards. If they have possession of these things, they should face prison time.
ReplyDeleteThese things can ruin the games that we love. Imagine that you grew up watching baseball heroes such as Hank Aaron and Reggie Jackson and you believed in the integrity of the game. Then along come people like Pete Rose, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire. They destroyed the game that once held so near to your heart and turned it into a mockery on the world platform.
Not only does it destroy the game, it hurts the country that the athlete plays for. Take Michael Phelps for example. Here he is, the golden boy of American Olympians. Then, all of the sudden the picture of him smoking pot surfaces and sends shockwaves throughout America. This is terrible publicity for the U.S.A, having our poster boy for the Olympics getting caught with illegal drugs that would send any normal person to jail.
Last but not least, it hurts the fans. Just imagine how the little children felt when they found out that their idol, Alex Rodriguez, got busted for steroids in 2003. These athletes are setting a terrible example for the younger generations. People like “Pac Man” Jones and Terrell Owens do not deserve to be in the public eye. They are destroying the future generations of fans and players.
I believe that the athletes who are not doing what they’re supposed to should be punished severely. They ruining the things that we love about sports. These athletes should be made an example of.
Have you ever noticed that when celebrities get caught drinking and driving or doing drugs, that they just get sent to rehab and are never really penalized? Lately there has been some controversy of how people should be penalized for D.U.I and possessions of drugs. All people should be treated equally no matter how much money or how high in the social ladder they are. These people are an example to the children and teens of our generation.
ReplyDeleteBecause they are supposed to be setting good examples, drug use and driving under the influence should not be judged lightly. Children look up to them and they should know that what they do, they can expect more kids to start because they think it is okay. They are not just harming themselves; they are also destroying our upcoming generations. By charging them the same as officials would other felons, next time they will think before they act.
When these star athletes get away with just going to rehab and not actually serving a sentence, it is technically not fair to the other normal people that have served sentences for these crimes. All men were created equal for a reason; no person deserves special treatment just because everyone knows their name. Most of the time, celebrities that get caught drinking and driving are just sent to rehab, but they end up getting sent back once they finish anyways. Obviously, it is not working for them, so they should try a more effective method of punishment.
Rehab is supposed to help them, but if they keep getting out and not doing their time, they should be sent to spend a while in jail. This method is so much more frightening and seemingly operational. Athletes should be the ones most concerned about their health and bodies. Once they do drugs or drink alcohol, they are diminishing their chances to become better at what they do. They need help, not just an unproductive week in rehab, which will help them make better choices in the future.
In the end, most will say that all people deserve equal punishment for their actions. They set bad examples for children and are making it difficult for others to follow the rules, too. If drug addict athletes are charged more harshly, there seems to be a better chance to have a better lifestyle. They really need it, not only for themselves but also for the others around them.
I firmly believe that professional athletes that get caught having possession of drugs or a DUI should be punished. Although I don't believe that they deserve any worse or any better treatmeant then any other regular US citizen. Sure they are in the public spotlight alot more then anyone else, but they don't have any more or any less then anyone else.
ReplyDeleteWe should make the punishment for being caught with drugs alot more harsh in general, and enforce it to everyone not just professional athletes. Using preformance enhancing drugs ruins sports and good competition. They give an unfair advantage that great athletes like Hank Aaron, Micheal Jordan, and Barry Sanders didn't use. They were some of the greatest athletes of all time. So why should athletes today be able to use them? If we harshen the punishment rules for everyone it will cut down on the number of people that use them or get caught with a DUI.
People like Charles Barkey, Micheal Phelps, and Barry Bonds are horrible examples of people of abused achohol and drugs. They deserve alot of punishment then they were given. When someone like Pacman Jones get caught using drugs, and you punish them. They shouldn't want to do them again, but after he got released from jail he went back to doing the same thing he was doing before he got caught. It shows some people don't take the punishment system in place to seriously.
Drugs, achohol, and stuff like that are very harmful to the body. The athletes don't see that they are damaging their bodies more then they are helping themselves. No one wants to look back on this generation, and see it ruined by drug abusers. I know I wouldn't, and im sure most would agree. As the number of times caught using drugs or number of DUIs rises then the punishment should be ALOT more harsh so people are more "scared" to use them in fear of the punishment.
Thats why athletes shouldn't be treated any differently then every day citizens, but punishment for being caught should be worse. They aren't anymore special then you and me. Also they shouldn't think they can keep getting away with drug abuse, and not get caught or weak punishment. Hopefully in the near future we see some much needed changes in professional sports especially.
-3. To what extent should embryonic stem cell research be used to improve the quality of human life?
ReplyDeleteStem cells can be the answer to many of our health related problems, although they do represent the beginning of human life, their use is not unethical due to the fact that the life has not yet been started. Professional athletes are often found in possession of illegal substances or arrested for a d.u.i. Their punishments, small fines, seem to be disregarded often since there are many repeat offenders. I believe the athletes should punished much more severely. Professional athletes are role models for kids, they are not above the law just because they make a lot of money, and they are harming the reputation of sports. For these reasons, I believe that professional athletes should be punished severely for their crimes.
ReplyDeleteAsk just about any kid who they look up to and it is going to be a professional athlete of some sort. What impression can be made on a child but a harmful one when athletes are being arrested left and right? Just this week rumors have been spread that Alex Rodriguez, a baseball player, has been using steroids. Knowing they are making an impression in the lives of young people, athletes still go out and make the same mistakes over and over. These athletes are not helping anything by having this sort of influence on the youth of today, that face enough problems as it is.
Athletes face consequences for their actions, small and meaningless however. Fines in the area of ten thousand dollars are given, but to a professional athlete that is as harmless to their pocketbook as prey is to a predator. Why don't the leagues actually inflict a punishment that might teach a lesson? Jail time is somehow always avoided. Their treatment should not vary from the average person's.
Personally, I love sports. However, the reputation of sports are being marred. People do not know whether or not to believe that a player achieved their status by skill or a performance enhancing drug. Barry Bonds, for instance, holds the all-time homerun record in baseball but has been accused of using steroids. I do not want the love of sports to die out, but with the growing reputation that they are not played fairly, I am afraid sports may fall to being something ordinary instead of something extraordinary.
So, in my opinion, I believe that professional athletes that are found inpossession of drugs or arrested for a d.u.i. should be punished harshly. They are looked up to by youth, they should not be above the law, and they are hurting the reputation of our nation's beloved pasttime. I hope something can be done about this problem.
Professional athletes should be treated with respect at all times. Such as parents, teachers, etc, but athletes are also looked up to as heroes. When you see a picture of an athlete smoking weed or getting drunk you don’t look up to them anymore. Athletes should be an example of how to live and behave. They also should think about what they do and why they do it.
ReplyDeleteWho’s your hero? Really? Okay, so say one day the paparazzi shot a picture and your only hero was caught smoking a blunt in a downtown alley? How would you feel about that hero then? Athletes don’t think about how bad they hurt us when they do things wrong. Yeah, we know everyone makes mistakes, but to make them twice and three times after the first, it becomes a habit. We should let them know how it makes us feel.
Professional athletes should be setting examples for other people. If we look up to them and want to be like them, and they are caught doing bad things, we’re going to be tempted to also. What kind of example is that? Not a good one. So they just need to realize why people look up to them and set a good example to follow.
Athletes also need to think about why they do these terrible things. Do they even have a reason behind it? Or is it an excuse? We need answers, not lies. So speak up.
Okay so when it comes down to it. Athletes are heroes, until they let us down. They should be treated with respect, until they lose theirs for other things. They need to think about what they do, when they do it. Most importantly they do not need to lie to us when they make mistakes. We will forgive them sooner or later.
How harshly should professional athletes be punished for drug use, drug possession, or when given a d.u.i.? Any celebrity should be treated the same way any normal person would be for using or having drugs. Celebrities might have loads of money to buy these drugs, but that is no excuse. Drugs can mess up your life, so no one should be an exception.
ReplyDeleteCelebrities or professional athletes should have the same punishment for any drug that any average person. Celebrities are people, so they should be treated the same as any normal person. It is true that a celebrity has an excessive amount of pressure to do drugs, but so do all the people living in our crazy world.
Celebrities have more than enough money to buy a plentiful amount of drugs. Why not use that money for something good? One thing that encourages well-known people to do drugs is the fact that it gives them publicity, causing them to become even more famous. That should not be an excuse to give them special treatment in their punishment.
Drugs can mess up the life you have as you know it severely. The person dishing out the punishment should stop and consider that before deciding on what their just desserts will be. Celebrities should learn from these mistakes to make their live better and make themselves a worthier role model to the people that look up to them.
In conclusion, celebrities are no exception to the laws we have to follow. Sure, they have the money for the drugs they are under punished for, but they definitely should learn from their mistakes to become better people. Their punishments should be the same as any other every day average-joe. Drugs are unhealthy and have bad side effects; therefore, no one should be an exception.

Persuasive Essay
Professional athletes should be treated the same as someone that does not play a professional sport. I mean there the same as a person who works in construction just a different job. They were born into the same sinful world that we were so just because they make a mistake doesn’t mean they have to be punished worst or any less than a person who does not play a professional sport.
Drinking and driving is a very bad thing to do, and anyone who gets caught should pay the consequences whether it be a professional athlete or the vender working at the game. People want this world to be a safer place and if we let the professional athletes get away with crime then they would just keep doing it.
Have you ever noticed that whenever a celebrity gets caught with the possession of an illegal drug, its all over the news and radio? On the other hand, when an average civilian gets caught, you never hear about it, unless it is in a local town. It’s never on national television, the radio, or in magazines. Same with driving under the influence, you never see a common citizen being published in a widespread magazine for drunk-driving. They may be put in a local newspaper or on a local news station, but that would only happen if they caused a car crash that injured or killed someone. You may not even see that, and you surely won’t hear about it nationwide.
ReplyDeleteCelebrities are punished in several different ways than the average-Joe. First of all, when a notorious person gets caught with the possession of illegal drugs, they always get their pictures taken by the media that stalks them. Those pictures end up in nationwide magazines which help encourage them to keep doing these dirty deeds, earning them more publicity. Some celebrities just get a mug-shot, and a record, then they can walk away. Others have to pay bail. Very few famous people are kept in jail for a long time.
When your average-Joe gets caught, nobody is there to take pictures or get the scoop on what happened. They just get their whole car searched as they stand aside and watch. If a stash is found, the person gets their face smashed against the hood of the cop car while the police shackle their wrists together. They get a mug-shot, a record and a nice little suite in the jailhouse.
Everyone should be treated the same. Celebrities are people too. They have no right to get away with an illegal action, just because they are on a movie or television show. They should be punished just as any other person, without any special treatment. That just encourages them to think they can get away with other illegal deeds. It could even make teenagers and children do the same thing because everyone wants to be like their role-models.
People are people when it comes to confinement for illegal activity. I don’t understand why people think celebrities are ‘all that’. They were just as ordinary before and just as they are still. Everybody has privileges, if you break a law, those rights should be dropped until you can earn the trust back from those around you. Not only do you affect yourself when you do something bad but you affect others around you.

Professional Athlete Punishment
How harshly should professional athletes be treated when found in possession of a drug or when given a d.u.i.? Professional athletes should be treated just as harshly as everyone else. Just because they are famous does not mean they are special or have special privileges. Drugs and alcohol affect professional athletes the same as everyone else and should be treated the same in every situation. If these athletes are not punished harshly enough they will not think what they did was that bad and are more prone to do it again.
Many times professional athletes are caught with drugs or drinking while driving and nothing is done. They may get a warning or be put on probation for a short period of time, while anyone else would be put in jail for the night and tried in court. Some professional athletes think since they are popular and wealthy they will not be punished as harshly and in many cases this is true. Everyone one should be treated equal and that includes being punished equally.
Drugs and alcohol affect everyone equally. Just because someone is famous does not mean that they could not have a car accident and kill someone. It does not mean that they could not sale the drugs they have to some teenager. Everyone may not individually be affected the same by drugs and alcohol, but as a whole both drugs and alcohol can make anyone drive dangerously or do something they should not be doing.
If professional athletes are not punished harshly enough they may think what they did was not really that bad. They are, then, more likely to repeat their behavior over again creating a habit that could become addicting. Punishment should be equally as harsh between professionals and nonprofessionals. It should be harsh enough so that the person will remember it, regret what they did, and not do it again.
Punishment to professional athletes should be as harsh as everyone else’s punishment. Being famous does not make these athletes special and they should not be treated any more special than anyone else. Drugs and alcohol can do the same things to these professionals as everyone else and they should be punished just as harshly so they will not do it again. Professional athletes should be treated harshly like everyone else when caught in possession of a drug or given a d.u.i.
Over the last few years there has been controversy over how harsh athletes should be penalized for a D.U.I and possession of drugs. All people should be treated equally no matter how much money they have or how high they are on the social ladder. Plus if you could give everyone a break then what would the world be like in the world. Look these athletes are examples for children and teens around the world.
ReplyDeleteThey are supposed to be setting good examples for us. I am very active in sports and I look up to a lot of baseball players. But when Roger Clemens went on trail for the use of H.G.H I lost all respect for him and other athletes. In Roger Clemens and Michael Phelps case they have pictures of Phelps. And if Clemens would have just said he did it I would still have respect for him.
It doesn’t matter how high you are on the social ladder or how much money you have. Or what sport you play it you get caught you should have the same punishment. Everybody says that athletes should only go to rehab, but sometimes rehab is not enough. After they use drugs or drink alcoholic they have ruined there chance of getting better at what they do. Before they do drug or drink they should think about there actions could change there life.
Some athletes just think that since that are good at this sport then they can do whatever they won’t. Or since they got a lot of money they can just get a lawyer to get them out of the situation. It isn’t just athletes that are doing this it is singers, government and state officials. But if that want to destroy there career then that is there on choice.
In conclusion athletes that get caught using drugs or get a D.U.I should have the same punishment as me or you.
Punishment
ReplyDeleteAthletes should be treated the same as any other person when found in the possession of a drug or when they get a DUI. Athletes are no different than any other human in the world except for their athletic ability, so why should they be treated differently? They should be charged as any other person who has been in trouble. They should get no slack when they are in trouble, but they should also not get harsher punishment when they are in trouble.
This past month Michael Phelps was photographed smoking marijuana. Based on this picture there was talk of legal actions coming against him. Now, do you think if Michael Phelps is the average American there would be any talk of this picture? People are pictured all the time
smoking marijuana, but because Phelps is a celebrity he is judged more harshly. Judging him because he is an athlete is not fair or right.
When an athlete gets a DUI everyone in the world knows. Sometimes he is sometimes even fired from his job because of the DUI. But again, because they are athletes they are judged more harshly. I know people who have gotten a DUI and he was not fired or was there any punishment brought against him at his work. People in the spotlight should not lose their jobs when other Americans do the same thing and have nothing happen to them.
In 2008 there were 872,721 people arrested for the possession of marijuana. This stat shows how many people are just in trouble for marijuana. This does not include people who did not get caught. Average Americans are not the only ones who smoke, people of every social status smoke. Just because a person is an athlete does not mean they should be judged more harshly than any one else.
Athletes should be treated the same as every other American. They should not get any harsher penalties. There should be no slack because they are of higher class, but there should be no mercy on them. Athletes normal people and do not deserve to be punished because they are celebrities.
Equal Treatment
ReplyDeleteAthletes should get the same amount of punishment as any other person in this world when it comes to getting into trouble. Just because a professional athlete gets into some kind of trouble doesn’t mean they should get any slack. People were not put on this earth to be treated any different than any other person. There is a reason God said “Everyone is equal”. When getting a d.u.i. or being found with drugs on them should be no different then finding someone out on the streets doing the same things. No one is better than anyone else on this planet.
When someone is charged with having drugs on them, there is automatically a consequence involved. If someone, say a homeless man on the street gets charged with that then a professional athlete should too. If he gets twenty years in jail then anyone should get that same thing, no matter who you are. The difference in your pay doesn’t determine the amount of trouble you get into. It shouldn’t matter how important you think you are. It should matter about how bad the charges are.
If a professional athlete gets charged with a d.u.i then they should get into some trouble. If there is someone who just has a normal job as a janitor gets charged with a d.u.i , they should get into just as much trouble. It would be unfair to a more unlikely person for them to get into a lot more trouble than a professional athlete. Even if they got a lawyer that could pay both their charges, it shouldn’t matter. Anyone who knows everyone is to be treated with equal respect would never disregard that.
Another example would be someone gets caught with a pocket full of pills. I have witnessed people on T.V get away with a lot more things than the normal human being would. Professional athletes are no more special than anyone else. Having a higher paycheck may make you feel better about yourself but, that’s only what you feel. It really doesn’t matter.
So no one should get any better privilege than anyone no matter how much better they think they are. Professional athletes may feel like they are on top of the world but, in reality, they are one of us with a higher paycheck. They let fame get to their heads and it makes them feel like they should get more out of things than a person with a less likely chance to succeed. So when being charged, it applies to everyone
Athletes today are held to a very high standard. Although, just because they are looked up to and admired does not mean that they are above the law. Famous athletes are citizens to and we all share the same rights. So I pose the question, if we share the same rights as famous athletes, then why don’t they share the same punishment as us, the common American citizen? They should be treated just like the rest of the nation. Just recently I knew a guy who got pulled over and charged with a D.U.I. the punishment for him was twenty four hours in prison. Why are athletes held in such high regard that we can just look over that like they did nothing wrong. Again I say these “gods” as we regard them, are not above the law!
ReplyDeleteRecently Michael Phelps was captured in a picture hitting a bong. He was not prosecuted for his actions though. He is not above the law more than anyone else is. Everyone in this country should share equal punishment for their actions. This is not the first run in he has had with the law though; he also has a D.U.I. on his permanent record.
There have been many other instances just like Michael Phelps and many of them had no consequences either. Marion Jones, a world class sprinter, tested positive for illegal use of anabolic steroids. Although she was not in trouble with the law for this, she did have all her medals she had won in the Olympics stripped from her. That is not enough though she should have to deal with the same punishment as the rest of us.
There is really only one case I can think of where the law has taken action in an athlete’s life. Barry Bonds was accused of using anabolic steroids also. Barry would not have been prosecuted, but he lied about using them in court. That itself is a crime and he is still on trial today.
So many athletes have used illegal substances. You read about it in the paper but they are not punished. It is not right! If some everyday citizen was caught hitting a bong, or using illegal steroids, they would be put away to do some time. Athletes are not above the law and they should share the same punishment!
Embryonic Research and You
ReplyDeleteBY Wesley LaBarge
As an effect of our great and intelligent minds, we came up with the idea of using embryos to solve our health problems, but that became a big problem for many. They believe that we should not take a life to save a life. We all know that if they were in the shoes of the ill that they would do everything possible to keep from dying. So why not research this topic and gather information that could one day help save thousands or even millions?
I strongly believe that not only as a country, but as a planet we should go to the full extent of embryonic research. It would help our chances of survival for ages to come and help those overcome their illnesses. For example, if someone were to have a bad vital organ that needed to be replaced, it could easily be replaced with a stem grown replica. Although many say that it is not of God’s will and that if you were meant to die at that time then you must die, then why did God bring the brilliant minds that came up with this idea into the world?
I hold the idea that everyone that is brought into this world has a purpose. Whether it is to play sports, save lives, become a teacher, or anything that happens in this world, it is for a reason. The scientists who researched this idea and found that this could actually be an answer to everyone’s prayers were brought to this world for that reason. They are doing everything in their power to save lives and do it with ease.
When this way of saving lives came to be, many disputers thought that this cannot and will not be done for numerous reasons. One reason why was because they did not believe it was right to take a life that could be in this world to save another, such as one of their own. I know for a fact that if I were to have an incurable disease or illness that I would want to do whatever it took to save my life, even if that meant using embryonic organs.
In conclusion of this topic, embryonic research is a must if we plan to survive the next 2000 years. We also need to put aside the dispute over whether this is right or not because it must be for reason. This type of research is very thorough and must be precise if we want to help people survive the numerous illnesses that are sure to plague us in the future. Embryonic research must be done and quickly before it is too late.
Economic Bailout
ReplyDeleteThe economic bail should be passed for the sake of our economy. It will help the unemployed, our education, and Medicaid costs. This bail out will help most Americans in more than one way. Our economy is in a financial crisis and I believe the bail out will give many hope for the future rather then the outlook of having no job and no money.
The economic bail out will hopefully put the millions of unemployed Americans back to work. It will provide more jobs for those whom have lost their jobs during the financial crisis we have been going through. If it is passed it will temporarily increase unemployment benefits and public working projects to create jobs. This will help the numerous amounts of families that are now facing unemployment from our economy’s financial crisis.
The second thing it would help is our education. Right now we need more funding for our schools to make them a better learning environment. The bail out will provide money for our schools to help students with achieving their goals. With this funding we could possibly have better books and classrooms to work with. It will also help pay for paying for labs and other things that used to be available with out the students having to pay for it. Also, it can help fund any extra activities for the schools.
Last this economic bail out will help aid to Medicaid costs. This is medical assistance for people with low income and families. It’s made for people who lack medical care and health insurance. This will be a great federal program to help families who don’t have the privilege of medical care and high income. It will benefit many Americans.
The economic bail out should be passed, in order to help everyone in the U.S. Whether it benefits your job, education or Medicaid cost. It will bring a balance to our economy during this time of crisis.
Unfair treatment against Professional Athletes
ReplyDeleteBy Anna Theriot
Athletes should not be treated more harshly when found in possession of drugs or when given a d.u.i. Professional athletes are normal people with gifted talents. The Keyword is “normal”. All people should be treated equally especially when it comes to punishment. No person should get a more harsh punishment than the other when they both have played a part in wrong doing.
Professional Athletes are at the top of the totem pole. Their fans and the whole world are watching their every move. Of course their going to slip up and make mistakes, their humans. But just because everyone’s expectations of them are higher than normal people doesn’t mean their punishment has to be too.
You may think little kids look up to them and when they see these professional athletes doing drugs or getting caught in the moment of doing wrong they’re going to be tempted to do the same. That is most definitely not true. Kids know right from wrong. It’s an instinct you get when you do something bad, it’s that feeling you get when you don’t do what’s right, and it’s called your conscience.
When some of these athletes choose to make these mistakes sometimes they don’t just make that mistake once, they make the same mistake over and over again. They know their in the wrong and they will suffer for it. Either by getting caught and being punished for it or by letting their mistakes catch up to them in the long run and effecting the way they play.
These days getting caught with drugs or being caught drunk at parties result in punishments such as: community service, fines, and if your old enough maybe even jail time. Those same standards should be held for teachers, students, mayors, and even professional athletes.
Professional Athletes are highly watched by kids and parents of today’s world. If they screw up it will be known by the whole world in less than twenty-four hours. The world thinks that if they do one little thing wrong they should be punished four times worse than a regular person in today’s society. The people of today’s world forget even though they play a professional sport does not make them more of a human than them. Athletes today should not be looked over if they do something wrong, they should have the same punishment if they were regular people in today’s life.
ReplyDeleteMichael Phelps was caught on camera smoking a bong at a party. He has not yet been charged with this law breaking crime. He is a prime example of Professional Athletes getting away with crimes that normal citizen’s would not get away with. He has confessed that he was smoking a bong at the party. The weird thing about this situation is that he has confessed about doing it but, he has not yet been convicted.
Roger Clemens is another Athlete that did something illegal. He has been charged with using performance enhancing drugs to his advantage in the MLB. He has been proven guilty, but he has not yet suffered the consequences for using illegal drugs to his advantage. If he was not famous, he would have been suffering the consequences already.
Barry Bonds is the final Athlete
Athletes Punishments
ReplyDeleteProfessional athletes should be treated harshly when found in possession of a drug or when given a d.u.i because sports are suppose to keep athletes away from drugs and getting into trouble in that manner. Everyone thinks that famous people that get caught with drugs or getting a d.u.i always gets an easier punishment, because they are always in the spot light. Another problem with athletes doing drugs and getting into trouble is not good for the rest of the world because many people look up to them and they think it is ok for them to get caught up into drugs. The last reason that comes to mind is when getting caught with drugs you should pay a price for doing it because it is wrong and by law it is illegal.
The first topic that comes to my mind when I think of drugs or getting a d.u.i is how an athlete should get punished when using it. They should get punished harshly because they are people too, even though they have more money and a better life than most people they should not get to be free or not get a punishment at all because of who they are. One punishment that I would give a athlete is making him or her sit out or be off the time for at least six months or so. If they continue to do drugs or get d.u.i’s then I would make them go to a rehab center and clean up their life then let them back on the team.
Another thing that really gets on my nerves is when athletes or famous people get punished for doing something wrong it is always easier on them as it would be if it was a normal person like you or me. When you are not famous you get a lot harder punishment like a longer time in jail or have to do community service for six months or so. As if it were an athlete or famous person they would go to jail but they would get out earlier than they were suppose to, kind of like Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, and Kloe Kardashion, they all got punished just not as long as they should have been.
The third reason why I did the punishment for athletes is that if a famous person does drugs or gets D.U.I’s is that many teens look up to them as role model and if they see their role model doing something like drugs and not get punished harshly then they might think they could do it and not get punished for it. Many celebrities are good people even though they do get caught doing something wrong it just that they have more people looking at them than we do as normal people that aren’t in the limelight everyday we do something. When people see celebrities doing something than we as people want to try it even if we do get in trouble. People always say take chances when you are young because when you are older you might not be able to do them. So as teens we do things we shouldn’t do like acting like our role models.
Those are my suggestions about punishing celebrities or athletes for getting into trouble with drugs and thinks. So once again the questions I asked myself was the type of punishment, the reason why. If you have any more suggestions about it then just ask.
If you ever really think about it; how many Professional Athletes do you see going to jail because they did drugs or got caught drinking and driving? I mean I understand that everyone is watching them and there is a lot of pressure on them to be outstanding but just because they are famous they shouldn’t be above the law. Sports are there to keep teens and people my age away from drugs, to show them that it is a waist of your life.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing I think of when I think of an athlete is that they should be a role model. If they are above the law then how can they be? I mean athlete are suppose to show you what’s right and if they are a drinking and driving or doing drugs that sends a message to teens that “hey its ok to do drugs or drink and drive, you’ll get away with it like I did,” then when a teen get caught and says “But I saw so and so doing it” what are we suppose to do? I believe that athletes should be allowed to drink but they should obey the laws when they do so. A role model is someone that us teens should be able to look up to and not have to worry about doing the wrong thing.
Another thing I think about is why do they get off so easily? Athletes are just like us, they have the same laws, live in the same country but they just get a slap on the wrist when they get caught drinking and driving or doing drugs. A judge will just send them to rehab or something along those lines. Athletes shouldn’t be treated harsher than us, but they should be treated equal. An athlete is great person but just because they are famous doesn’t mean they should have a special advantage to the law. Just because they live on a better salary then most people doesn’t mean they should get off as easy as they do.
Some of the ways I think an athlete should be punished is maybe sitting out a few weeks if it is something minor, or a few months if something major, and if they continue to do it they should go to rehab to see if that will help, if it doesn’t then they should go to jail or something to that extent.
So many athletes have used drugs or been caught drinking and driving, you read about it in papers, magazines, and it’s on the news most of the time, but you never hear about them being punished or going to jail. If teens get caught smoking weed or using steroids they have to go to jail. Athletes shouldn’t be above the law, so why do we let them be? I say we put a stop to it.
Persuasive essay question: How harshly should professional athletes be treated when found in possession of a drug or when given a d.u.i.?
ReplyDeleteProfessional athletes have the same rights, freedoms, and responsibilities as every American in the United States. They should also be treated the same when it comes to the possession of drugs. Just because they are famous and have great talents does not make them “special” in any way. They are looked up to by many people and should live a life of good example.
These athletes think just because they are famous they should get a little slack when it comes to getting involved in drugs etc. They are the same as everyone else and should be treated that way. The only difference in some average man getting found in possession and an athlete is that one is higher on the social ladder than the other and that means nothing.
If you were to ask any kid who they admire, they are likely to mention some professional athlete. On the other hand if you ask them after this athlete has had drugs this might change. If someone sees an athlete do this they might not think it is so bad and decide to do it themselves to see if they get the same attention as the athlete got. People in society will begin to think they can get by with these things too. Athletes are looked up to and should live a life according to that.
Athletes should not be given any slack when it comes to this matter. They should also not get a harsher punishment than any normal American. They should get the regular punishment and move on.
Professional athletes should be treated equally like everyone else. If they get slack they will more than likely do it again. They will think they can get by with it, but they cant!
Professional athletes should be punished for doing drugs and d.u.i. like other American citizens. It’s not good that athletes can get away for doing these horrible things, unlike the citizens who get put in jail. It doesn’t say anywhere that athletes can do anything they want to do.
ReplyDeleteYou hear everyday in the news about singers, athletes, and actors and actresses get busted for drug use and other bad things. This past weekend there has been big deal about baseball star Alex Rodriguez using steroids in 2003. It is most likely that he will probably not be penalized for this. Athletes are usually banned for using Human Growth Hormones and steroids.
Last week, Michael Phelps was busted for smoking marijuana. He was suspended for only three months, unlike someone else would be put in jail. It also hurts his reputation with people for doing such an awful crime. How is it that an iconic athlete gets only three months of suspension, while the average American will usually be thrown in jail for years and years?
During November of 2008, Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg in a New York night club. He was suspended by the NFL for the remainder of the season. Since it was his first offense with the law, he will probably get off with a warning. If someone who is not a superstar athlete was to do that, they would probably be thrown in jail for a long time.
Athletes are regular people like you and me. If we do something wrong, we should all be punished for the horrid crimes. Athletes seem to get off easy when they do something bad. We all should be punished for doing horrible things.
