Edward Taylor (1642?-1729)
Make me, O Lord, thy Spinning Wheel complete.
Thy Hold Word my Distaff make for me.
Make mine Affections thy Swift Flyers neat
And make my Soul thy holy Spool to be.
My Conversation make to be thy Reel.
And reel the yarn thereon spun of thy Wheel.
Make me thy Loom then, knit therein this Twine:
And make thy Holy Spirit, Lord, wind quills.
Then weave the Web thyself, Lord. The yarn is fine...
My Words, and Actions, that their shine may fill
My ways with glory and thee glorify.
Then mine apparel shall display before ye
That I am Clothed in Holy robes for glory.
Response: First, think about this: Edward Taylor was a Puritan pastor. How are his occupation and beliefs shaped in this poem? Second, think about the factors that shape young people today. What kinds of beliefs and backgrounds shape the attitudes of youth today? (Elements of Literature, Fifth Course, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2005)

ReplyDeleteHe shows his beliefs by presenting them to the reader. He's basically presenting a love poem to the lord.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the wrong factors are shaping today's youth. There should be better influences out there such as Tim Tebow.
Many beliefs and backgrounds shape the lives and attitudes of teens today. Religious and personal beliefs along with cultural background and family life strongly influence how we act and think. They affect our relationships and our all around happiness and well-being.
ReplyDeleteHis occupation shaped practically the whole meaning of the poem: He was a pastor. He is basically saying he gives himself to God, and he commits himself to God.
ReplyDeleteI believe that peers, friends, music, technology, and other basic things in life shape a youth today. The way your friends act, is usually the way you act. The type of music helps you see how they look at life. Peers can show if a person is weak or not.
UH. I think he is expressing his feelings for the lord. He is showing gratitude to a man that is almighty and very powerful. So I think this is a great blog.
ReplyDeleteEdward Taylors beliefs and occupation is shown in this poem. He is a preacher and is a firm believer of God. He is telling God that he wants him to shape his life. He is telling the Lord that he is basically giving his life to him, that he wants God to shape him into what he wants him to be. I think that things shaping teens life today are not some of the greatest things. Some of the teens still believe their is a God but due to things going on in their life they do not cling to him and trust him like they should. I think Taylors shows a tremendous amount of faith. The life he lived was in a pure time, many of our teens are not given that oppurtunity. I think teens are out to suceed. In this modern world a person depends on money more than ever. It has made our generation very greedy. So I think some key things shaping the youth in this day are money, and competition. This whole world is all about competition. That makes the attitude of a young person very selfish. Basically the outlook is every man for himself, suceed no matter what it takes. I think some of our religous backgrounds to effect decisions we make now. It effects how we treat the people around us.
ReplyDeleteThanks,Mr. Chatman. Don't forget to avoid informal language and spelling (including lack capitalizaion) on this blog. UH (delete, delete)I'm glad you're enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteHe was a puritan; therefore, he wants to glorify God in everything he did. In Edward Taylor’s time the teenagers were supposedly living their life through God. I think that technology really shapes our youth today, we focus on who is going to text us and we do not think ahead to the future. America is called the Great American Melting Pot because we all come from different backgrounds, but we learn to cope with someone different unlike the puritans where they were used to people like them not.
ReplyDeleteThe author is expressing his love for the Lord and that he wants the Lord to help him live a good and curteous life.
ReplyDeleteSongs, some stories, and movies affect teens mostly today. If we read this piece of writing over and over it would most likely drill a hole in our head that would be for the good.
I think that beliefs and your background plays a major role in young people lives, because we all believe in different things so we are all going to look at life differently because of that.I also think that because of our different backgrounds, beliefs, and family that we are going to act in very different ways.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Quintarius ( for the first time ) and he is showing alot of mercy and expressing himself to the Lord, that He can do anything like spinning a wheel.
ReplyDeleteSo i am saying really really nice work Mr. Edward Taylor.

In this blog, Mr.Taylor is expressing the way he feels about God. In a way he is trying to show that even sinners can love god as much as he does. I believe that bad attitudes are shaping what is becoming our future.
ReplyDeleteI think that he is saying that he is willing to live his life for the Lord. The youth's attitude is refected by their family and friends.
ReplyDeleteIn this piece of writing he is basically saying he gives his soul to the lord and he should do what he feels necessary with him. Today's world is so turned upside down it is not even funny. People believe in the craziest things. It is all unbelieveable. Today's youth try and look up to all the celebrities shown on television like nothing is wrong with the appereance they give off or the attitude they give to anybody and everybody because they think they can do whatever they want. None of them are good role models. Most have been in and out of rehab for drugs and alcohol. Some are so skinny it makes you sick to even look at them. Those are the people we are looking up to. Do you really want that for our youth? Think about it, would you want you kids in the future to turn out like all the celebrities are now days?
ReplyDeleteI think that thisis a great peom. I think its like he is saying how much he believes in the lord. The way of life back then was centered around the lord and what he said to do, and today many teens and some families forget bout the lord. Everything is centerd around cell phones, computers, and T.V. I agree with Cody Arant that we do need better influnces in today's world.
ReplyDeleteI think that his beliefs and occupation are shaped into this by how he is a Puritan Pastor and is talking about God and how he is connected to him personally.
ReplyDeleteI belief that the youth in today's world could stand to be corrected. I have lived in many places to know that teens of our day aren't the "new generation". Teens of today focus on getting a boyfriend/girlfriend, drugs, and other things that teens shouldn't be thinking about. I personally don't agree with any of teens behavior in today's world. They are focused on wants and what everyone else is doing instead of things they need and who's around them. My advice for teens who know they have gone down the wrong road is to life your life fully. Go have a family day, enjoy their presence while you can, because one day, they will be gone and you will regret not having the opportunity to do the things you can do now. Live your life to it's fullest, for everyday is a new day filled with wonderful surprises, not darkness.
